Onsen are traditional Japanese bathhouses, and can be found in various places around Tokyo. While recently onsen has become a more general term in Japan, technically “onsen” refers specifically to hot spring water baths. There are many different kinds of onsen, including wooden baths, stone baths, and foot baths. Bathhouses are typically segregated by gender in Japan, and private baths for couples are rare outside of hotels. A few onsen in Tokyo require visitors to wear bathing suits which can either be brought from home or rented at the facility.
